may. 9 2012 CE topic: Lunch

I don’t think that forcing kids to eat healthy food all the time is very good for the teens in the long run, because sure maybe for a couple of days they would eat the healthy food served in the cafeteria but soon they would get tired of eating inside and not being able to eat what they like.

Since many schools now days have fast food restaurants and cafes around the school in walking distance, it would decrease the amount of students buying lunch from the cafeteria which would also mean less money for the school. I have also noticed many students at our school have stopped buying at the cafeteria especially since the school no longer serves fried foods and everything is baked and sugar free.

Although I do understand that many parents and school staff would agree to the healthy choices available to students during the lunch hour, it isn’t fair how the students are being forced to eat fruits and veggies when they don’t want to. In the article it stated that in some schools in Chicago, students are only allowed to eat food served in the cafeteria unless they have an allergy, or another medical reason. Also many schools in the Chicago area are also starting to do lunch checks and not allowing students to eat any foods that are considered un-healthy.

Like the article says, by taking away fried foods it doesn’t necessarily mean that the amount of fruit consumed by students will increase drastically, there may be a slight increase however many kids will most likely eat more “junk food” and other treats outside of school since they are being deprived of it. After all if kids exercise or work out you can eat anything in moderation.

  1. Hey, Razia! :)

I agree that forcing kids to eat healthy food ALL the time is not a very good idea. As a teenager myself, I would HATE to eat only healthy food everyday, but it doesn't mean that I wouldn't eat healthy food at all. Even if there are many fast food restaurants around our school, I've seen many people pack fruit and veggies for lunch and I don't think it's a big deal at our school. Personally, I think that we should choose what we want to eat. When we are young, our parents can control our food but as we get older, we are pretty responsible for what we eat. Also, remember we have the fruit and veggie program at our school which I think is great! It's a great step toward getting everyone into liking healthy food. It's a better way than how schools in Chicago check everyones' lunch. It seems too foreful. We have P.E programs at our school and after we work out really hard, I think that we deserve some treats. ;)

You're essay looks great to me! I like how they are in multi-paragraph form but maybe you could go in more detail and add some more sentences to each one. :) You shared your own opinion well and I could see that you've done some research to add more proof. Maybe next time, you can add the links to your sources!

Thank you for posting on time and this one was a great first post! Good job, Razia! :)
